Apelle, the First of the Great Italian Horses
Apelle, son of Sardanapale and Angelina, was born in 1923, bred by Federico Tesio, one of the largest Italian breeders.
Apelle, the First of the Great Italian Horses, was a horse without that burning end that is very popular with the fans, but he had a terrifying gait from the start, able to crush any resistance: he was an exceptional Passista.
He wins 14 of the 23 races in which he participates.
These include the Criterium de Maisons-Lafitte, the Italian Derby, the Grand Prix of Milan, the Coupe d’Or de Maisons-Lafitte, the Coronation Cup, and Twice the Sandown Cup.

We are facing the first horse above the average bred by Federico Tesio, able to shine abroad since 1926, the year of the modernization of the Capanelle Racetrack in Rome, while in Italy wins the Derby and the Grand Prix Milan, staying ahead of the start on arrival, with a record time of 3’11 “06 on 3000 meters.
Over the border also won the Maisons-Laffitte Gold Cup and the Coronation Cup.
It was bought by the French for 2 million francs and subsequently transferred to England.
Here, after some very brilliant seasons, its performance dropped considerably in tone.
Apelles is remembered above all as a father of Tofanella, mother of Tenerani, the father of Ribot, born in England, in Newmarket, in 1952, precisely by Tenerani and Romanella.
Ribot is Raised by Federico Tesio and his magical interpreter for the whole career was the great jockey Enrico Camici. Ribot owes his fame to his unbeaten career: sixteen consecutive victories in the sixteen races in which he participated in the most important Grand Prix disputed in Europe.
But to this other extraordinary horse we have reserved a page entirely for him.
Returning to Apelle, the First of the Great Italian Horses, for three years is the leader The World of stallions in Europe.
He died in 1940.
Let’s remember it in this vintage italian movie.
