Now a little history of Glasses of Murano: the creation of glass objects is believed to date back to ancient Egypt and came up to the Romans to adorn noble houses but it takes many centuries before, thanks to Arab and Asian influences, the processing becomes an art, the art of glass processing.
And this happened in Venice when, to prevent fires on land caused by the glass processing process, Murano was used as a floating factory.
Since the glass manufacturing process is very complex and economically important, the glassmakers were allowed to carry swords to defend themselves and to enjoy some immunities but they could never leave the Republic in order not to spread the secrets of their art.
For many centuries the master glassmakers of Murano will maintain the monopoly on the quality and processing of glass, millefiori, crystalline, enamelled, lattimo, up to the rediscovery of ancient Roman glass, today’s murine.
Murano is still the home of a good number of artisan laboratories where the master glassmakers always use the ancient techniques to make their works famous all over the world.
