Lake Maggiore is one of the most beautiful lakes in Italy and we talk about it at Club Cavallo Italia’s site because this is the world of lovers of horse, beauty, class, elegance and research these values in everything that it does surrounds: in clothes, moments and places, beautiful locations such as Lake Maggiore.
It is not easy to choose where to start telling Lake Maggiore so many are its beauties, its traditions, its attractions.
We start from Stresa with its Festivals, the Musical Week in Stresa, magnificent music played on extraordinary backgrounds such as the Borromeo Palace of the magnificent Isola Bella, the splendid Cashmere Loggia on the Mother Island, the suggestive Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso and the historic Rocca Borromeo, to Angera, on the Lombard lake shore.
From Stresa you can admire the archipelago of the Borromean Islands, an indispensable destination, reachable in a few minutes by boat and dominated by Isola Bella with its beautiful Baroque palace, with its luxurious salon enriched by precious works of art overlooking the extraordinary Italian garden consisting of ten terraces that gently descend towards the lake, a garden where you can admire the very rare white peacocks that swirl freely on the meadows.
The magnificent garden is enriched with tanks, fountains and statues up to the Grand Theater with the statue of the Liocorno.
A few steps from the palace you can visit the ancient village, eat in the restaurants and buy a souvenir of the visit in the small typical shops.
Leaving Stresa along the Lake Maggiore is a must for a stop at the famous Gardens of Villa Taranto, between Verbania and Pallanza, famous all over the world for the richness of the floral species that can be admired, gardens derived from the great work of Captain Mc Eacharn , in 1931, began the realization of this magnificent work that, from March to November every year, gives emotions, scenery and perfumes to all visitors.
Captain Mc Eacharn set the English style to the gardens, although Italian inspirations are not rare with statues, fountains, terraces, waterfalls …
All of this makes the Gardens of Villa Taranto one of the most important botanical gardens in the world: an area of about 16 hectares across 7 kilometers of avenues, an Eden impossible to describe so rich is the presence of colors, scents and emotions.
We leave the Gardens of Villa Taranto and, heading towards the border with Switzerland, we meet the most beautiful villas of all Lake Maggiore, built between the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, some overlooking the Lake Maggiore, other locations on the rolling hills that crown the lake.
In Ghiffa le Ville Ada Troubetzkoy, which is based on the motif of a Russian dacha, Villa Giuseppina Giusti, whose architectural style is embellished with various ornamental elements, and Villa Laforet, a favorite home of the painter Augusto Laforet, passionate author of lovely views.
In Oggebbio you will find Villa Drahnet-Zervudachi, one of the most impressive mansions in Lake Maggiore, and Villa “Loneliness” Polli, far from the inhabited centers and immersed in a vast park away from the frenzy of the cities.
Walking along Lake Maggiore to Cannero, Villa d’Azeglio is home to Massimo D’Azeglio, a simple and linear style, practically hidden by the thick vegetation, and at Villa Cannobio, Villa Sabbioncella, immersed in the woods.
Now we take care of the gastronomy and the wines of Lake Maggiore starting with alpine cheeses, a true culture that originates thanks to the great meadows for pasture, cheeses to match the famous bodied and perfumed wines of the area, such as Ghemme Dogc, Nebbiolo Doc or Vespolina Doc and Angera wines.
Moving to the nearby Ossola valleys, we can taste the wines with mountain flavors such as the Prünent with its 700 years of history, the Neuv Bruschett and the Cà d’Matè, the Ossolanum, the Tarlap and the Balòss.
Let us finish our journey on Lake Maggiore from where we started: Stresa why spend a few nights and prolong the visit are not to be missed the great hotels of Stresa, the pearl of Lake Maggiore, also renowned for its luxurious hotels that have hosted illustrious characters like the King of Italy Umberto II, Princess Margareth of England, Eleonora Duse, Gabriele D’Annunzio, George Bernard Shaw, Toscanini, Clark Gable, Andrew Carnegie, Rockefeller, Hemingway and Charlie Chaplin are just some of the celebrities from the beauty of the place.
