Until the eighteenth century via Monte Napoleone is indicated in the maps of the city of Milan as Contrada di Sant’Andrea or Contrada delle barre of Sant’Andrea but, with the arrival of the Austrians in Milan, who opened the pawnshop here, the name changes in the Contrada del Monte of Santa Teresa.
Subsequently, with the French domination the street changed its name to the Contrada of Monte Napoleone and, with the fall of the Kingdom of Italy, the name was shortened in Contrada del Monte.
With the Unification of Italy and the consequent reform of the name of the streets, the street is called with the current name of Via Monte Napoleone.
