The Berber Horse
The Berber Horse is a horse of North African origins known since antiquity: in fact the area of origin of the breed, once called Barberia, from which the breed takes its name, and today the area that includes Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Libya..
There are several original strains of the Berber Horse: the Algerian, the Moroccan, smaller, and the Libyan, with a lot of Arab blood, up to 156 cm tall.
The first imports into Europe are due to the Romans, who used them in races at the Circus Maximus and, in the seventh century, the breed was introduced to Europe through Spain to strengthen and improve the indigenous races and important was its contribution in the selection of the English Thoroughbred.
The Berber Horse, the favorite horse of the Tuareg, today is a race in strong contraction bred in its original form only in restricted areas of Morocco, Algeria and Libya.
It is a late breed that reaches full development only in the sixth year of life.
The Berber Horse is vigorous, courageous, docile, has uncommon qualities of speed and background, is resistant to climatic variations, fatigue and diseases.
Saddle horse, very frugal, is currently used for sports and light shooting.
